Numbers and indices

A selection of resources.

Click on the title of the resource to expand the section for a description. Clicking on the green button within the description will take you to the resource. A summary of the topics covered is included in the blue box within the description.

Calculations (BBC Skillswise)

This site offers a range of resources from E1 to L2. The resources are grouped into six headings: Calculations, Measuring, Number, Shapes, Graphs, Percentages and Fractions. Each topic has a short video showing how the subject occurs in the work environment . A selection of fact sheets and activities can be accessed by clicking on the appropriate level in the box on the right of the screen entitled “start learning”. Games and quizzes can be accessed in the scroll bar at the bottom portion of the screen. Calculations, has sections on: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, pen and paper methods, times tables, multiples and factors, and problem solving.

How to use compound measures (PDF) (Excellence Gateway)

This resource from excellence gateway provides a good overview of compound measures. There is a section on interpreting compound measures which covers a range of interesting options, followed by a section on forming your own compound measures and finally a section on calculating using compound measures.

Departmental Workshops - Number and Algebra (NCETM)

This is a link to a set of departmental workshops from NCETM on number and algebra. The full range of workshops can be viewed by clicking on departmental workshops in the list on the right of the screen.

Estimation (Math is Fun)

This section from maths is fun covers making estimates for a variety of calculations. It details some of the reasons for using estimation and has some useful links to explore the topic further.

Rounding and estimating (BBC Skillswise)

This section from BBC Skillswise offers a number of factsheets and question sheets. If you select level 1 from the start learning box on the right of the screen you will find factsheets and questions covering estimating by rounding numbers and checking using estimates. Skillswise also provides similar factsheets at Entry level 3,2,1 which can be used to develop your students skills before tackling these sheets and questions. There are also games, quizzes and a video on this page.

Applying Properties of Exponents (Mathematics Assessment Resource Service)

This is one of many resources produced by the Shell Centre at the University of Nottingham for the MARS project in the USA. There are comprehensive teacher notes and excellent student resources. This lesson examines the laws of indices. The teachers’ notes are particularly useful to anyone wishing to get to grips with the big idea(s) behind the topic.

Algebra (The National STEM Centre)

This resource is from the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching. It is designed to improve confidence in mathematics . Each section offers an overview of a particular topic and the key issues that will be covered, as well as highlighting some common misconceptions. Worked examples are provided to support learning and these are followed by focused exercises to practice skills. Activities to reinforce learning and offer extension opportunities are also supplied, as are topic related tests.
