Deepen your understanding

Background/rationale

These workshops give Maths teachers, particularly teacher of Functional Skills an opportunity for teachers to develop their confidence in a variety of concepts, experience a range of pedagogies and resources and so facilitate improvement in and reflection about good maths teaching and learning.

Impact

Using such approaches and activities has been shown to improve the learner experience in maths lessons and to have an impact on student progression and achievement. Teachers who have attended these courses should become more confident maths teachers.

Audience

Those answering ‘yes’ to any of these questions.

Are you a functional skills teacher or might you be asked to teach GCSE Maths?

Would you like to:

  • improve your knowledge and understanding of topics
  • think more deeply about the pedagogy used in mathematics teaching
  • deepen your mathematical knowledge
  • work collaboratively with colleagues
  • find out about resources and activities to use with your students?

Training aim

Each workshop will focus on specific mathematical topics and the associated strategies for teaching and learning the topic.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session delegates will be able to:

  • Have a deeper understanding of the processes used in solving questions involving the topic being considered.

Workshops available

Workshop 1 Thinking about Number

This workshop aims to support participants to

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of Number topics and in particular their knowledge and understanding of
    • Number systems
    • Place value
    • Rounding numbers
    • Using manipulatives
    • Fractions, decimals and percentages and to
  • Develop their approaches to teaching Number to learners in a post-16 setting

Workshop 2 Thinking more deeply about Number or Deepen Your understanding of Number

This workshop aims to support participants to

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of Number and in particular their knowledge and understanding of
    • Place value
    • Fractions, decimals and percentages
    • Ratio
    • Directed numbers and to
  • Develop their approaches to teaching Number to learners in a post-16 setting

Workshop 3 Thinking more about Number or Deepen your understanding of Number

Providers booking this workshop can, in liaison with a NCETM accredited trainer, choose sessions from the topics listed below. Each workshop 3 will also include a session looking at GCSE Higher questions.

This workshop aims to support participants to

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of Number and in particular their knowledge and understanding of
    • Prime numbers, factors (divisors), multiples, common factors, common multiples, highest common factor, lowest common multiple, prime factorisation and/or
    • Standard form and/or
    • Standard units of mass, length, time, money and other measures (including standard compound measures) and/or
    • Powers and roots and/or
    • Indices (including fractional indices) and surds (builds on Powers and roots) and/or
    • Approximation and estimation (including upper and lower bounds) and to
  • Develop their approaches to teaching Number to learners in a post-16 setting

Event information

Workshops 1 and 2 are one day workshops which usually run from 10.00 to 16.00. They are for up to 24 participants.

Workshop 3 topics can be chosen to make a whole or half day workshop.

Applicant conditions

Applicants should already be teaching Level 2 Maths or know they are going to be asked to teach it in the near future. They should want to deepen their understanding of specific mathematical topics and develop associated strategies for teaching and learning.
