Maths Careers Website
This web site is excellent for students and teachers who want to know more about the applications of mathematics and the possible career routes opened up by studying mathematics. It provides many of the answers to the perennial question, ‘Why are we studying this Miss?’. It has been put together by the Council of Mathematical Sciences (The London Mathematical Society, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the Royal Society). It is easy to navigate and has clear menus which help you home in quickly on the information you require. Most of all, the image the site presents of mathematics and mathematicians is both vibrant and engaging.
In the 11- 14 section there are some interesting, easy to use case studies which could be used as a starter or plenary in class. There are downloadable powerpoint presentations on the use of mathematics which would be great for lessons or careers events. The section on ‘What use is the maths I study at school?’ will be of interest to both students and teachers.
The 14-16 section is more specific but contains many more case studies and career profiles as well as detailed section on the use of mathematics in our everyday lives. The page called ‘Do some maths now!’ invites students and teachers to get stuck in with getting their hands mathematically dirty and has some interesting context based mathematics.
The post 16 section focuses on the way ahead and the benefits of studying mathematics or a mathematics based course to a higher level. Again the format is engaging, dispelling many of the negative images which can surround mathematics and there are no tweed jackets with leather patches in sight!
The site can be accessed in many different ways:
- By students as part of a research project or homework task.
- By teachers who might want case studies and real life applications for lessons.
- By parents who might want to encourage their children to develop their study of mathematics.
The information it provides is engaging, lively and easy to access. Whether you simply want to download the excellent posters and powerpoint presentations or whether you want to make the use of the site as integral part of your teaching it is well worth exploring.
