Professional Development activity - 2 hour learning module
Each week the Secondary Magazine will include a Professional Development activity. Available in PDF format, this series of learning modules is ideal for giving a focus to a department meeting or INSET session.
Each week we will publish a new learning module, which over the weeks will build up in to a shopping list of PD activities, so that you can pick and choose the materials that best suit your own development needs.

The first twelve modules will cover the following areas: Self-evaluation, Why do we teach Mathematics?, Mathematics learning script, Pathways and Options: KS3 to KS5, Mathematical vocabulary, Revision, Group Work, C/D Borderline, AfL: Using the lesson objective, Technology for learning, Questioning scripts, and AfL: Formative use of summative tests.

Group work
This week's module considers the opportunities presented by group work.
Overview
Many of us trying to incorporate group work into our lessons are finding it difficult to break out of our comfort zone. Allowing students the opportunities to work collaboratively can be difficult in the mathematics classroom because we feel out of control in terms of the direction and path in which the students’ learning progresses.

The purpose of this unit is to consider ways of using group work in the mathematics classroom. You will assess the effectiveness of using groups of various sizes and consider how to utilise group work to enhance the students’ learning in mathematics.
