Maths4Life, a Skills for Life programme funded by the then DfES, was based at the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy (NRDC) between July 2004 and March 2007. NRDC remains a partner in the NCETM’s further development of post-16 mathematics and numeracy work.
A major part of the Maths4Life project was the production of the ‘Thinking Through Mathematics’ materials to support the professional development of teachers of adult numeracy. ‘Thinking Through Mathematics’ was launched in Spring 2007 at a series of NCETM events across England and this resource was originally available to order as a ring-binder. The ring-binder is no longer available to order, but some of the materials are now available online.
Read a review of this resource, written by Brian Welters, Numeracy Tutor, Milton Keynes Adult Community Learning. ‘Thinking Through Mathematics’ is a very useful and adaptable resource aimed at supporting teachers and learners working around Entry level and Level 1 of the Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum and follows the approaches exemplified by the resource ‘Improving Learning in Mathematics’.
