Learning Maths Outside the Classroom

In November 2006 the DCFS published its manifesto 'Learning Outside the Classroom'. The NCETM actively promotes the learning of mathematics outside the classroom, this part of our web portal features projects that demonstrate good practice from many parts of the country.  These professional development modules provide details of whole staff activities.

Professional Development Module 1 - Primary
This primary module provides an outline session for the whole staff on Learning mathematics outside the classroom, allowing time for teachers to explore the mathematical learning potential in the immediate environment of the school. Teachers are then encouraged to plan units of work incorporating some aspects of work outside the classroom and then try out the ideas before discussion in a follow-up session.

Professional Development Module 1 - Secondary
This secondary provides an outline session for a department meeting on Learning mathematics outside the classroom, allowing time for teachers to explore the mathematical learning potential in the immediate environment of the school. Teachers are then encouraged to plan units of work incorporating some aspects of work outside the classroom and then try out the ideas before discussion in a follow-up session.

Professional Development Module 2 - Primary & Secondary
This module is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss the teaching and learning experiences planned and tried out after Module 1. The session goes on to encourage teachers to investigate, using websites and other resources, the possibilities for similar work, beyond the school grounds, visiting local museums, nature reserves and other places of interest.

Professional Development Module 3 - For Everyone Involved in Mathematics Education
Learning outside the classroom is invaluable and essential to learning.  It allows children to see the world which is beyond the classroom – a world which many of the children, in our society today, will never have the opportunity to experience.  It is our role as teachers to then utilise places, other than the classroom, to stimulate, inspire and enhance learning.  Links need to be made between real life and school to give learning a sense of purpose and a need for children to achieve.  We give most consideration to what children are actually learning – the learning objectives, however it is just as important to give thought to where children learn and how children learn.
