Welcome to week 7 of the NCETM Secondary Magazine. Our Professional Development module this week investigates the uses of Group Work in the classroom. Plus our usual 5 things to do and Website of the Week features.
Personal Learning Space
I was quite excited when I logged on the other day to find that the NCETM portal now features a Personal Learning Space. It is a private area for every user, in which you can link to favourite items on the portal, easily access your own contributions, make notes and reflections on resources and materials, and collect evidence for use in career progression.

For ages now, I have been meaning to look up and sort out the necessary paperwork for my performance management. We were given huge amounts of documentation at the school where I work and briefly talked through them. I also downloaded the relevant sections from the portal a few months ago. However, these things are easily forgotten or misplaced. Having the Learning Space now allows me to collect all of the evidence I need much more easily, and prompts me to add to my career portfolio.

While exploring My Files & Folders, I was pleasantly surprised to find all the files and folders I have previously submitted throughout the portal! I had forgotten how many different items I have posted, and to have them all in one place is fantastic.

Since January, my laptop has had to be rebuilt three times which has been extremely frustrating because I had not backed up some of the vital files as often as I should. Consequently, I have lost a number of very important documents. The Files & Folders element of the Personal Learning Space provides 10MB of space, so I can quickly save those crucial files which will then allow me to work from any computer in the likely event of my laptop failing yet again. Another brilliant feature I am eternally grateful for.

How are you intending to use the Personal Learning Space? What are your thoughts about how useful it will be for your professional development? Will the members of your department be encouraged to use it?
