Key Stage 5 (AS-Level)
Coordinate Geometry in the (x,y) plane
Question 1 of 4

1. How confident are you that you know and can make connections between:

a. equivalent forms for the equation of a straight line?

Example

Standard forms for the equation of a straight line are:

(1) y - y1 = m(x - x1)
(2) y = mx + c
(3) ax + by + c = 0

Example:
Consider the straight line y - 3 =

1
2
(x - 5).  This can be rearranged to y =
1
2
 x +
1
2
 and 2x - 2y + 1 = 0

The arrangement you choose to work with may depend on the problem you are solving. For example, form (2) may be useful for sketching the graph, as the gradient and the y-intercept are explicit. Form (3) may be useful if you are solving a pair of simultaneous equations.
