1. How confident are you that you are aware of every child’s learning needs, and that you monitor each child’s progress?

a. Starting with the child


Each child has had different experiences, which means that they all have their own starting points. It is important to identify what the child knows and is interested in, and to use this as to plan their learning journey. Observe what children do and say while involved in play, be aware of the extent of their maths vocabulary and use mathematical language with them: ‘Have you got more than me?’ Encourage their questions and value their ideas. Avoid turning the discussion into a question-and-answer session.
