1. How confident are you that you can calculate with powers and roots?

a. Problem One

Problem

Without using a calculator find the value of the following:

a) 32 + 43

Prompt 1.

32 means 3 × 3 and 43 means 4 × 4 × 4

b) √81 − √25

Prompt 2.

9 × 9 = 81 therefore √81 = 9 and 5 × 5 = 25 therefore √25 = 5

c) 103 ÷ √100

Prompt 3.

Work out the value of 103 and √100 before you do the division.

Solution

a)
32 + 43 = (3 × 3) + (4 × 4) = 9 + 64 = 73
b)
√81 − √25 = 9 − 5 = 4
c)
103 ÷ √100 = 1000 ÷ 10 = 100
