copper pipes

Write down an expression for y in terms of x.

Prompt 1.

This is asking you to write down an expression that starts with y = … and has some function of x on the right hand side.

Prompt 2.

The original pipe has a length of 1 m so x + y = 1. Now rearrange this to get y = …

Solution

copper pipes

The original pipe has length 1 m so the lengths of the two smaller pieces must add up to 1.

x + y = 1
Therefore
y = 1 − x
