Interests : Alison joined the NCETM as an Assistant Director in May 2017. Before that she was involved in primary education in various roles for around 20 years. As a class teacher and senior teacher, she led maths, assessment and music in a number of schools. For many years, she was a Primary Strategy Mathematics Consultant in Surrey and also spent two years lecturing at The University of Brighton on their ITT courses in maths. The combination of these roles allowed her to explore how children learn and how teachers teach from many perspectives.

In the years immediately before she joined the NCETM, Alison became increasingly interested in teaching for mastery, and worked with the Surrey Plus Maths Hub, in particular leading their Primary Subject Knowledge Enhancement Training for teachers in her own and other local schools.

Alison is interested both in how the resources and representations presented to children support and deepen their understanding, and how teachers’ own subject knowledge impacts on the way they teach.
