Interests : My key interests are in the design and delivery of the mathematics curriculum. I enjoy the creative aspects of mathematics and am constantly amazed by how many times I find I still don’t know about or haven’t fully appreciated a connection between areas. I spent over 30 years in the secondary classroom teaching at all levels up to and including A level and the IB Diploma. I was also fortunate enough to spend some time working in an international school in SE Asia where my thinking was influenced by the investigative approach, underpinned by rigorous attention to the mathematics, being used by teachers from Australia and New Zealand. During this time, I was also involved in training primary teachers in the “new” numeracy hour being introduced in England as this was being seen as a key driver for improvement in children’s understanding of number.

As my career developed I became involved in developing a BTEC Award in Mathematical Applications, which involved teaching the mathematics through a context such as sport or engineering. I have also written Functional Skills papers and worked on cross-curricular projects – all aiming to ensure the mathematics made sense in the context and enhanced the work being done in classrooms.

Before joining the NCETM team I was a Local Authority advisor/inspector supporting both primary and secondary schools in curriculum planning and raising attainment. Planning and delivering CPD was a major part of the role, and the most rewarding in terms of seeing teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogy becoming integrated as they begin to see “how it all fits together” and can take that understanding back into their own classrooms. I am therefore delighted to be working within the Professional Development and Evaluation strand.
