Interests : I was a teacher and manager of mathematics in schools and FE for over 20 years and have worked on a number of national projects mainly focused on professional development. Immediately before joining the NCETM in 2006, where I worked until retiring in 2019, I was a National Subject Lead for Mathematics in the DfES [now DfE] Standards Unit, co-leading the development of the post-16 mathematics teaching and learning framework ‘Improving learning in mathematics’ and serving on the department's Mathematics Board.

One interest I have is about how we enable learners to be active participants in mathematics learning, and the professional learning that supports teachers to make this happen which has motivated my involvement in a number of projects. I have served on a range of working groups and advisory committees, including most recently, the advisory group for the Mathematics in Further Education Colleges project and the ACME Post-16 contact group. I have been an active member of subject associations throughout my career and was President of the Mathematical Association for 2009-2010. I am also a primary school governor.
