Interests : I joined NCETM in 2013 as the project lead for the multiplicative reasoning project which centred around the use of 3 pilot hubs across the country for its delivery. Following the establishment of the Mathshub programme I worked as a link advisor to a number of hubs before becoming a member of the secondary team working with Mathshub and workgroup leads to develop and support secondary NCPs. Collaborative learning is at the heart of what we do.

Having taught for 19 years in inner city secondary schools in Nottingham as a maths teacher and head of department, I became a National Strategy Mathematics consultant in Nottingham city. This involved working closely with subject leaders and teachers and included a strong focus on classroom ‘demonstration’ lessons. I later became a Maths advisor for Nottinghamshire LA where much of the work focussed around maths improvement planning in schools facing challenging circumstances.

In my early teaching career, I was lucky enough to work in a school local to Nottingham university Shell centre. As a department we were heavily involved in the trialling of many Shell centre materials. The nature of this participation with its focus on teaching and learning discussion arising from paying careful attention to the impact on our pupils learning, not only developed my own practice but greatly influenced me with regard to the power of this type of collaborative learning as a professional activity. This has followed through into work in my current role.

It is particularly satisfying to increasingly see young teachers coming though having developed their practice in this way, with many enthused to move from participant to WGL and gain wider responsibility for driving T&L in their schools.
