Interests : I joined NCETM in June 2018 as Regional Lead for the South West straight from Primary Headship.

There are two key aspects to my Regional Lead role:

-to act as the principal NCETM link to the Maths Hub leadership and management teams in the region, supporting, equipping and enabling them to fulfil their role

-to work with key regional stakeholders, and representatives of national government programmes supporting mathematics and STEM more widely, to develop and support the implementation of a coherent strategy for mathematics school improvement in the region

The regions are aligned with Teaching School and RSC regions. My region is the South West.

Having taught for 23 years in a very diverse range of schools, often in challenging circumstances, I still place children at the heart of my thinking. Leading schools as a headteacher for over 8 years, previously working as Deputy Headteacher/SENDCo in large and small schools in the South West (including in a 0-18 campus based all-through school), gave me the opportunity to lead passionate and committed professionals through 7 successful Ofsted inspections.

I had the amazing opportunity to be part of the China – Shanghai Exchange in 2014 which empowered me to talk about Mathematics in depth and reflect on how teachers’ use of mathematical relationships, very careful lesson design, talk in the classroom and the use of context can impact on all children within a class. This was my introduction to the work of the NCETM and the Jurassic Maths Hub Strategic Board.

I am excited about supporting the Maths Hub Network within the busy world of schools because sustained school improvement needs teachers to be researchers, looking beyond their establishments and working collaboratively. I have always established networks and value the opportunity to work with stakeholders so that schools can easily access information and work collaboratively with high quality support to give children the best opportunities to develop Mathematical understanding.

Building from EYFS through all key stages is exciting and all professionals can learn from each other. How the right professional development opportunities can change habit and improve and sustain day to day practice has always been a challenge. Teacher Research Groups, with many professionals being guided and challenged by someone with some expertise is empowering. Supporting this professional collaboration is something that really energises me in my new role.
