Interests : I joined NCETM in June 2018 as Regional Lead. The regions are aligned with Teaching School and RSC regions. My region is Lancashire and West Yorkshire. There are two key aspects to my role:

-to act as the principal NCETM link to the Maths Hub leadership and management teams in the region, supporting, equipping and enabling them to fulfil their role

-to work with key regional stakeholders, and representatives of national government programmes supporting mathematics and STEM more widely, to develop and support the implementation of a coherent strategy for mathematics school improvement in the region

Prior to joining the teaching profession, I worked in engineering, witnessing first-hand how mathematics is the cornerstone of the industry. This sparked my passion for all things STEM! Teaching mathematics to children in a variety of secondary schools in St. Helens and Wirral (comprehensive 11-16, all boys 11-18, all girls 11-18) for 15 years was my absolute honour and privilege. I was Head of Maths throughout the National Challenge and I led my amazing teams through many changes to GCSEs and A-Levels, ensuring that children’s enjoyment of mathematics remained our core motivator.

As an Assistant Headteacher and Lead Practitioner, I was able to contribute to developments in whole-school teaching and learning, data and timetabling and I was a coach for both new and experienced teachers. I lectured in Mathematical Statistics to undergraduates at Edge Hill University and more recently, on their PGCE Mathematics programme as Associate Tutor. I believe strongly that quality initial training then ongoing, research-based, professional development are vital in the retention of teachers of mathematics.

With a working-class background, I strive to contribute to closing the achievement gap between disadvantaged children and their peers. My family play an important part in my life – I have two young girls and I am fiercely passionate that gender should not influence choice!

I am interested in how collaboration leads to improvement and therefore very excited to be a part of NCETM and the Maths Hubs Programme.
