I have had a rich and varied career in Education working across a broad spectrum of schools and the Early Years and Primary phases. Initially I worked in a school in challenging circumstances where I developed my own practice and also became part of the Mathematics leading teacher programme which provided the opportunity to work with others and support teacher professional development. I then moved into an LA consultancy role. This experience continued to enhance my love and commitment to learning and teaching in mathematics. I worked in this role for a few years; writing and leading local and training events, supporting schools in the locality and working on national materials. Whilst in the consultant role I worked with senior leadership teams to develop whole school provision. My own professional development continued through study for an MA and the NPQH award. I then moved back into school to a deputy headship of a school of 400+ pupils.
Whilst in a leadership role I had the opportunity to explore the impact of early education on pupils’ development, this was a development area for the school. This became a focus of mine as I took up an international post as Head of Lower School (3-7). Here I had the opportunity to lead a team to ensure that early provision across all areas nurtured and fostered curiosity, promoted a desire to learn and was building firm foundations for future learning.
I have always had an interest in evidence based practice and continue to read research and apply new learning to my practice I am fortunate enough to have observed practice in Hungary, South Africa and Canada and to lead a lower school in Houston. Working abroad has enabled me to reflect on what works well and to question approaches in terms of their educational impact.
Most recently I have set up and lead the PGCE Primary Award at Staffordshire University and the PGCE EYTS so I have a keen interest in how ITE programmes equip the teachers of the future across a range of phases. I also provided mathematical support in the University’s growing MAT for schools at different points in their development.
I am an enthusiastic and committed practitioner who endeavours to make all training sessions the best possible learning experience through a mixture of theory and practical application to further develop classroom pedagogy.
I have been focused on developing the understanding of Mastery for the last few years through practice, engaging with a local maths hub, becoming the Hub Mastery lead and ongoing research into the pedagogy via the Doctorate that I am undertaking.
