Mixed-age whole-class teaching
In this approach, all pupils in the class are taught together, following a carefully-sequenced two-year rolling programme
In this approach, all pupils in the class are taught together, following a carefully sequenced two-year rolling programme. This model works particularly well in mixed Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 classes, where mathematical content can be combined more effectively.
Key features of this approach
- One maths lesson planned and taught per day
- Pupils progress together through the curriculum
- More time for deep thinking, reasoning and application
- Over-learning strengthens retention and understanding
- Mapped NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation materials support both pupils and teacher development
This model can also form part of a blended approach. For example, in a Y2/Y3/Y4 class, Year 2 pupils might be taught separately while Years 3 and 4 are taught together.
