New NCETM multiplication and division materials to support primary teachers

We’ve begun publishing our new multiplication and division materials to support you if you’re in Years 1 and 2. They follow the popular resources for number, addition and subtraction which are now complete. Further batches will follow this year, together with materials to support the teaching of fractions.

Places available on our funded Teaching for Mastery Programme

There’s still time for primary schools to apply to join the funded Teaching for Mastery Programme, run by Maths Hubs across England next year. We’re looking to recruit another 3,000 schools in 2019/20, with each Maths Hub working with at least 100 schools. The programme will help teachers develop the skills and knowledge to introduce teaching for mastery in their classrooms, and sow seeds for whole school change. Applications close on 22 March.

New email round-up for secondary teachers

Since our last newsletter, we’ve launched the Secondary Round-up. Previously called the Secondary Magazine, it has a new look and feel, bringing you some of the best content from our website and across the world of secondary and post-16 maths teaching.

More support for Early Years

A series of progression charts is now available for Early Years, one for each of the main areas of Early Years maths.

Also, our classroom materials supporting CBeebies' Numberblocks are complete and ready to download for all of Series 1 and 2.

New podcast: raising girls' participation in maths

In our latest podcast we speak with Rachel Beddoes, Girls’ Participation Coordinator of the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP). She explains what the barriers are for girls' participation in maths, and what teachers and schools can do to overcome these. She also gives details of events and bespoke support available from the AMSP and other organisations.

Maths Hubs recruitment opportunities

There are currently vacancies for Maths Hub Leads in both the Yorkshire Ridings and South Yorkshire Maths Hubs. If you’re interested in applying, our recruitment page has more information.

In brief

• The Royal Society Partnership Grants Scheme offers £3000 to UK schools or colleges to enable pupils aged 5-18 to carry out STEM research projects in partnership with a STEM professional. The application process for 2019 is a two-stage process and stage 1 will close at the end of February.
• The Mathematical Association wants to hear from Key Stage 3 maths teachers in the UK. They’re interested in what issues you think are currently affecting the teaching and learning of maths at KS3. Their 60-second survey is now open.
• Let Teachers SHINE is a national competition offering up to £15,000 to teachers who have ideas they would like to pilot in their classroom to help disadvantaged children aged 4-18 succeed in English, maths or science. It’s free to enter and open to any qualified, practising teacher working in England. The deadline for entries is midnight on 23 April.
