Maths Hubs professional development projects for 2019/20

We’ve published the complete range of fully-funded CPD opportunities available through Maths Hubs and the NCETM in the coming year (2019/20). The 25 projects cover a broad range of teaching and curriculum areas, and are aimed at teachers of all school and college phases, from Early Years, through primary and GCSE, to post-16.

In the mix are two that offer opportunities to achieve or enhance maths leadership accreditations. If you’re a teacher interested in leading the professional development of others, you can join the year-long NCETM Accredited PD Lead Programme, where there is also an option to gain Masters-level credits with further academic study.

If you’re a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE) and want support with developing approaches to maths improvement work, you can apply to join the Maths SLE School Improvement Support Programme.

The closing date for applications to both programmes is Monday 1 July.

A new look for Maths Hubs in the North West and hub boundaries across England confirmed

Two new Maths Hubs are now serving schools in the North West of England, bringing the total number of hubs in the Maths Hubs Network to 37. Abacus NW Maths Hub works with schools in Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, and parts of Lancashire. Cheshire and Wirral Maths Hub serves schools in Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Halton, and the Wirral.

At the same time, the areas served by all 37 hubs across the whole Maths Hubs Network are also now clearer. Schools and colleges wanting support from their local Maths Hub can find out which local council areas are served by each hub. Most schools and colleges are unaffected by this, but if you want to check which is your local hub, the Maths Hubs website has more information.

Maths Hub renamed in honour of Alan Turing

One of the Maths Hubs serving schools in Greater Manchester has been renamed Turing NW Maths Hub, in memory of the World War Two codebreaker Alan Turing, who worked in the University of Manchester’s Mathematics Department after the war. The new name was formally unveiled by Lady Nicola Turing, wife of Alan Turing’s nephew, at an event earlier this week.

Latest additions to our Features section

If you haven’t yet noticed the Features section on our website, you’ll find it’s the place with our most recently published material. Since our last newsletter, we’ve added articles on the recent KS2 SATs questions, and a primary school where ‘ability grouping’ is a thing of the past, There’s also an explanation of the coming T levels in the post-16 sector, and a round-up of the four main maths podcasts aimed at teachers.

In brief

• After last month’s announcement of ‘early career’ payments for maths teachers, there’s now news of a ‘retention’ payment of £5,000 for teachers who meet certain criteria. More details via the DfE website
• Our partners at MEI, who run the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) have a range of professional development opportunities for 2019/20, aimed at teachers of GCSE, A level and Core Maths. All summarised here
• Ofqual is looking for teachers to give their views on the new A levels in Maths and Further Maths, as well as other subjects. Free workshops will take place in Coventry in November, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. More information
• If you know of someone who might be thinking of applying to study maths at the University of Oxford, their open day is being live-streamed on 3 July, as part of their ‘going behind the scenes’. The live stream starts at 10.00 with an introduction to Mathematics at Oxford, and can be watched via Facebook or livestream.com, where you can also find out more details.
