Extra in-school maths support
Information and advice to help schools seeking maths support from the National Tutoring Programme
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) is a DfE-funded initiative providing schools with heavily subsidised extra teaching support for disadvantaged pupils who’ve lost ground due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Under the programme, schools will be able to ‘buy in’ one-to-one or small group tuition from any one of 32 approved organisations, called Tuition Partners. Schools will have to foot 25% of the bill. The NTP will pay the remaining 75%.
Schools are free to choose which Tuition Partners they engage, and how they integrate any tuition into the school day. With that in mind, our strong advice is to ensure that any tuition complements what pupils are doing in their scheduled maths lessons, and that pupils do not miss scheduled maths lessons in order to receive extra tuition.
If you are involved in making these choices for maths or numeracy tuition for your school, here are some questions you may want to ask potential tutors or their organisations.
Question for primary schools to ask Tuition Partners
- Are you familiar with the broad principles of teaching for mastery?
- How would you integrate these principles into any sessions with pupils?
- Are you familiar with the Teaching mathematics in primary schools guidance, issued by the DfE in July 2020, and the NCETM resource highlighting the Ready-to-progress criteria at the heart of this guidance?
- How might you use the Ready-to-progress criteria in a session with pupils?
Questions for secondary schools to ask Tuition Partners
- Are you familiar with the broad principles of teaching for mastery, and in particular the principles in this secondary-specific NCETM document?
- How would you integrate these principles into any sessions with students?
- Are you familiar with the NCETM resource Shaping the Year 7 curriculum: building on Year 6 which mentions the Year 6 Ready-to-progress criteria introduced in the publication Teaching mathematics in primary schools guidance issued by the DfE in July 2020?
- How might you use the Key Ideas documents in these materials to support the design of a session with students?
