New KS4 Professional Development Materials: Geometry

The final set of Key Stage 4 Professional Development Materials is now available, completing the full suite of Secondary Mastery Professional Development Materials for both KS3 and KS4.

Theme 11: Geometry comprises four core concepts that support teachers to deepen their understanding of some of the most important ideas in secondary geometry:

  • transformations and relative position
  • reasoning with the properties of a circle
  • trigonometry
  • 3D shapes.

Within these core concepts, the materials explore how students can develop increasingly connected mathematical understanding. Core concept 11.1 introduces bearings and vectors as ways of describing relative position, while also deepening understanding of transformations. Core concept 11.2 uses the properties of circles to explore proportionality, circle theorems and the equation of a circle. Core concept 11.3 extends trigonometry into problems involving three-dimensional space and non-right-angled triangles. Core concept 11.4 uses different two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional shapes to support students in reasoning about surface area and volume.

The Secondary Mastery Professional Development Materials are designed to support teachers in strengthening their subject and pedagogical knowledge. They can be used by individual teachers for professional learning, or by departments to support collaborative professional development and discussion during departmental meetings.

With the publication of Theme 11, all eleven themes are now available, providing a comprehensive set of materials covering the full KS3 and KS4 curriculum.

Engaging with a Maths Hub on Secondary Teaching for Mastery provides opportunities to explore the materials alongside colleagues from other schools, share approaches and deepen understanding through professional discussion.
