Early Career Teachers (ECTs)
Information about free professional development for ECTs, including the Expertise in Teaching Maths Modules
How can Maths Hubs support me as an ECT?
The Maths Hubs Network is a friendly bunch of people who love to talk about teaching maths! They collaborate on how best to support pupils through mathematics teaching for mastery, working together to reflect on classroom practice and to plan for future learning.
There is a range of professional opportunities for ECTs, where the emphasis is on non-judgemental support to develop classroom practice further. These opportunities are all fully funded, meaning they are free to participating schools.
Your local Maths Hub will be able to help. They would love to receive an introductory email from you! It would be helpful for your hub to know which phase you teach in (e.g., primary) as well as the school where you teach, so make sure you include this information. Once your Maths Hub receives this, they will contact you regarding how you can access professional development.
What do these professional development opportunities look like?
In your first year as an ECT, you might want professional development that builds on the Initial Teacher Training Early Career Framework (ITTECF), and that you have full control over, so that you can work through this at your own pace and at a time that suits you. In which case, you will want to access the ECT Expertise in Teaching Maths Modules.
There are six modules in total, and you can choose which modules to do and when to do them. You will need a username and password which your Maths Hub will be able to organise. If you’re interested in this, please let your local Maths Hub know by email, with ECT Expertise in the subject line.
In your second or third year of teaching, you might want the opportunity to deepen your understanding of teaching for mastery, by creating space to reflect on your classroom practice to date, and exploring how you can further develop your expertise through collaboration with others, in which case, you will want to access one of:
- Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics - Primary Early Career Teachers
- Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics - Secondary Early Career Teachers.
What about longer-term professional development opportunities?
